Diacerein (also known as diacetylrhein)is an inhibitor of Interleukin-1B (IL-1B) production commonly used for the treatment of joint diseases such as osteoarthritis (swelling and pain in the joints). An updated 2014 Cochrane review found diacerein had a small beneficial effect on pain.
Diacerhein and rhein reduce the interleukin 1beta stimulated inducible nitric oxide synthesis level and activity while stimulating cyclooxygenase-2 synthesis in human osteoarthritic chondrocyte. [1]
Pharmacological studies of diacerein in animal models of inflammation, arthritis and bone resorption. [2]
