4-(methylamino)butanoate t-butyl ester is a pharmaceutically useful building block. Its typical applications include: preparation for a selective, potent, time-dependent HLE (Human leukocyte elastase) inhibitor suitable for formulation as a topical aerosol drug for possible clinical use, development of an orally active CCR5 antagonist based on antagonist, derivatives of tertiary amine benzocycloheptene and solution-phase synthesis of  tetraproline peptide,which is  a feasible alternative to the solid-phase synthesis of oligoproline CSPs.
