The application of Ionic liquids
Ionic liquids are moten salts in which the ions are poorly coordinated, which result in these solvents being liquid below 100°C, or even at room temperature (room temperature ionic liquids, RTIL's). At least one ion has a delocalized charge and one component is organic, which prevents the formation of a stable crystal lattice. These substances are variously called liquid electrolytes, ionic melts, ionic fluids, fused salts, liquid salts, or ionic glasses.

Ionic liquids are typically moderate to poor conductors of electricity, non-ionizing (e.g. non-polar), highly viscous and frequently exhibit low vapor pressure. Their other properties are diverse: low combustibility, excellent thermal stability, wide liquid regions, and favorable solvating properties for a wide range of polar and non-polar compounds.

Ionic liquids are commonly used as powerful, green solvents and eletrically conducting fluids (electrolytes). Their other potential applications has been broadened in organic chemistry, electrochemistry, catalysis, physcial chemistry, life science and material science. Recognizing that approximately 50% of commercial pharmaceuticals are organic salts, ionic liquid forms of a number of pharmaceuticals have been investigated. Combining a pharmaceutically active cation with a pharmaceutically active anion leads to a Dual Active ionic liquid in which the actions of two drugs are combined.

According to the type of cation, ionic liquids are basically divided into the following catergories: Imidazolium-based ILs, Pyrilidinium-based ILs, Ammounium-based ILs, Pyrrolidinium-based ILs, Piperidinium-based ILs, Phosphonium-based ILs and Morpholinium-based ILs.  The functionalized ionic liquids are classified by the type of groups, including hydroxyl, carboxyl, ether, ester, amido, sulfoaaide, vinyl, benzyl, nitrile and guanidine, etc.
